Protect Yourself from Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colourless and odourless gas which is produced through partial oxidation (combustion) of fossil fuels. Carbon monoxide joins with hemoglobin in the body to form carboxyhemoglobin, this starves the body of oxygen and can cause death.
It is important to remember that burning of fossil fuels needs oxygen, this is why vents are fitted, to allow air, which contains oxygen, to fully oxidise with the fossil fuel. Do not block vents.
- Use a Carbon monoxide alarm near to your appliance
- Ensure that your chimney or flue is swept regularly
- Use only HETAS registered installers for fitting solid fuel appliances
- Do Not Block Vents
